TITLE A language-independent shell of a system of precise morphological analysis and synthesis of natural language texts and a functioning system of this type for the Russian language OBJECTIVES The shell must be adjusted to a specific language by (a) filling in linguistic tables which contain data on this lahguage and (b) compiling a dictionary where words of the language are assigned reference to corresponding lines of the tables. All linguistic resources of the system(recognition of some forms, error correction etc.) are determined only by a form of tables and may be brought into perfect conformity with your own views and needs. An example of filling in tables for the Russian language is given. A system constructed in this way represents a library of routines with the following functions: (a) INPUT: a text or a word, OUTPUT: for each word of the text - its unique number which remains invariable with any modification of the dictionary and a set of its grammatical characteristics (such as the case, the number, the tense and so on); (b) the reverse transformation - generation of a word on the basis of a set of characteristics; (c) correction of mis-spelt words with the possibility of explaining the gist of an error; (d) generation of a given form (or the dictionary form) of a word; etc. Special features: extensibility for enlargement and gradual accumulation of linguistic knowledges; differentiation of homonymy and variability: appointment of a unique number for a word; recognition and correction of mis-spelt words; the possibility of entering in the dictionary of those word strings which contain non-letter symbols and spaces as well as of some word combinations; high internal performance at the expence of the original access to the dictionary. APPLICATIONS Linguistic processor and artificial intelligence systems, text processing systems, text well-formedness checking, teaching systems, translation systems and electronic dictionaries, linguistic researches and compiling of frequency dictionaries. The system may be used by persons with an incomplete command of Russian. It is particularly efficient when combined with a syntactical analysis module at our disposal or of your own.
